Interview with an Uprising Star

At SHINE Magazine we  identify  African talents and share their stories to inspire others. This month, we caught up with a famous event planner who told us her story.

How do people call you?

My name is Muma Laura, the Founder and CEO of Clauras Events. I’m a Cameroonian by nationality resident in Maryland, USA.

What’s your business all about ?

My  company is about event planning. We do everything an event needs to be successful. I have a complete team of professionals and we handle every major aspect  such as  planning, decoration, moderation, cake, photo shoot among others.

What motivated you into starting this business?

My source of motivation was my mom. As a little girl, I was often amazed at the things she did on the side for an extra income.  When I came to the US, life was not tough and I had to earn an extra income to make ends meet. As someone with multiple years of experience in communication and public health in Africa, I thought it would be easy getting a job in line with the things I had always done. But things didn’t quite work out as anticipated so I had to do something. As I pondered on what to do, I realized that event planning was something I had in me as a talent. I had done it for people back in Cameroon and there was not a single person who wasn’t impressed by my services. So with the new multicultural environment, knew I had to improve on it to meet the taste of the different prospective clients. As I decided on it, I began offering to help family members and friends plan their events. I started off on a very small scale as a one man affiar but today the business has grown into a full a company.

In this time of fierce competition, what makes you outstanding?

Clauras Events is very unique in it’s approach to event planning. We offer a complete package. When  we sign up with a client, we offer that client everything that is needed for the success of the event. We handle events of all magnitude, such as  weddings, anniversaries, graduations, christening, and birthday parties among others. So long as it’s an event, we have what it takes to deliver.

What amount of success have you registered thus far?

So far it has been really encouraging. When your clients continue to refer other prospects to you, you know that they are happy with what you have to offer and that is an indication success.

What has been your biggest challenge and how did you manage it?

My biggest challenge  was starting.  Coming from Cameroon, it was very difficult to sell my service across to other non Africans. More so people tried to talk me down and many times I wondered if I was doing the right thing but I remained focused on my dream. Today,  I am happy things turned out to be and I’m glad I didn’t listen to naysayers.

Where do you see your business in the next 3 years?

We are growing and in the next 3 years I see my company in most states in America.  At the moment we are currently in Maryland and we cover the DC metro area. We look forward to opening branches in other states as time goes on.

There are many people out there who are afraid to make a move and embrace their dreams. What advice do you have for them?

It’s simple -”Never give up on your dreams no matter what comes  your way.” There is an opportunity out there for everyone. Connect yourself to the right people, read books about successful people and above all believe in yourself.

 If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

I would simply say…”work in progress’
